Opening Day is a celebration of two of America’s great pastimes -baseball and softball. In Artesia, it
is when children and their parents announce proudly that they are there to PLAY BALL!
Opening Day, which was on March 15, is the official start of the Youth Baseball and Softball season at Artesia Park. The season lasts from March 15 to mid-June for all of the recreation teams at Artesia Park. For those teams that are considered "travel ball," they continue playing until Labor Day.
This year ARtesia has 25 teams; six softball and 19 baseball. Their names vary and are creatively selected and chosen by each team. Some of the names are The Diablos, The Redwings, The Wolf Pack, The Black Widows, and of course traditional names like the Dodgers, Mets, Rockies, and Orioles.
Lots of dedicated work and fundraising go toward this immensely successful program.
The Artesia Park Volunteers Group donated $3,300 in team jerseys for all of the 25 teams. The Recreational ball league is sponsored and coordinated by the Department of Parks & Recreation.
Sign up your child for the next season starting Thanksgiving weekend of this year, and the program accepts ages starting at four years old (Tee Ball) and goes up all the way up to the age of 14.
