Mayor Ali Taj has been a dedicated leader in the City of Artesia for many years, serving both as Mayor and Council Member. His leadership extends beyond Artesia, having served as President of the League of California Cities, where he advocated for policies that promote housing development, support small businesses, and strengthen public safety across California. Throughout his public service, Mayor Taj has remained committed to improving the quality of life for all Artesia residents.
Born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, Mayor Taj’s path to public service began halfway across the world. He attended The British School of the Netherlands before earning bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science, followed by a master’s degree in public administration. He later joined his family in the United States in the late 1990s to pursue new opportunities.
Like many American immigrant stories, Mayor Taj’s journey began with humble beginnings—working at The Good Guys for $4.25 an hour and mopping floors at a Shell gas station. Through hard work and determination, he built a successful career in finance, first as a financial advisor, then as a management executive, and eventually rising to the level of Vice President at American Express before co-founding his own investment fund. These experiences shaped his understanding of the challenges and aspirations of working families. As a father and now grandfather, he understands firsthand the challenges facing young families trying to purchase their first homes, and he remains a strong advocate for policies that make housing more attainable for all.
On the Artesia City Council, Mayor Taj has drawn on his financial expertise to help stabilize city budgets, promote responsible development, and advance housing solutions that make homeownership more accessible. He has also prioritized public safety, working closely with local law enforcement and regional partners to ensure Artesia remains a safe and welcoming community for residents and businesses alike.
Proficient in several languages—including Urdu, Punjabi, Farsi, Hindi, Dutch, French, and German—Mayor Taj brings a multicultural perspective to his leadership. Having been exposed to many faith traditions from a young age, he values Artesia’s diversity and often attends services at local places of worship across different faiths. His commitment to inclusivity, fiscal responsibility, public safety, and community well-being continues to guide his service to the residents of Artesia.
